An executive secretary during the 1950s, my mom used to talk about the Tip-Top-Tap. Perched atop the then-Hotel Allerton on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, the cocktail lounge offered striking views of the skyline and became the place to be. During the 1950s, it gained national attention when Don McNeill began to host his “Breakfast Club” radio show from the lounge.
During its time, the club was one of the finest-quality places in the city to sip a cocktail. Its neon sign continues to loom large, even though the club itself closed in the 1960s.
